Mental Health First Aid

A two-day course

  • Become a Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®)

  • Training teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. 

  • You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe.

  • Delivered across four time-sensitive manageable sessions. Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions, and workshop activities. 

  • Open to all, but especially pertinent for HoD's and leadership roles onboard.

Mental Health Aware

A half-day course 

  • Raises awareness of mental health 

  • Teaches people what mental health is, how to challenge stigma, basic knowledge of some common mental health issues 

  • Looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing 

  • Gives delegates the confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

  • Delivered either face-to-face or via online video conferencing. Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities. 

  • Open to all onboard.

Refresher Course

A half day course

If you completed your Mental Health First Aid certification 3+ years ago, it is now time for a refresher to keep your certification active. 

This refresher is open to anyone with an MHFA certificate no matter where they trained.

Psychological First Aid Essentials

A two hour course

Rapid awareness and core skills for yacht crew or expedition teams.

  • Introduction to Trauma at Sea (using Mel Harries Model for fire crew and search and rescue).

    • What trauma is and why near misses count

    • Impact of austere, remote, extreme environments on mental health

  • Recognising Red Flags

    • Signs of acute stress vs PTSD

    • When to escalate: PC-PTSD-5 screening questions

  • PFA at Sea: The 5 Principles (using Kate Baechers Model for expeditions, austere, remote and harsh environments)

    • Identify risks for individual and group and promote safety, calm, connectedness, self-efficacy, and hope

    • Adapting these for onboard and remote medical situations

  • Practical Exercise (using Amanda’s Medical training models)

    • Short role-play using a maritime case study

  • Immediate Self-Care for Rescuers

    • Controlled breathing, grounding, buddy check-ins

Psychological First Aid Applied Skills

A four hour course

Competence in applying PFA in marine incidents. Everything from 2h course, plus:

  • Understanding Trauma Physiology

    • Stress sensitisation in ongoing voyages

    • Cumulative trauma in maritime work

  • Case Studies & Scenario Drills

    • Examples: collision at sea, overboard recovery, fatal accident in port

  • Adapting PFA to Maritime Constraints

    • Limited space/privacy, communication delays, medevac delays

  • Supporting the Crew Long-Term

    • Follow-up strategies over weeks/months

    • Coordinating with shore-based mental health resources

  • Skill Stations

    • Down-regulation techniques

A eight hour Course

Leaders, medics, and safety officers gain mastery for long-term resilience planning. Everything from 4h course, plus:

Yacht Mental Health and Wellbeing

A full day course (5-6 hours)

This course teaches people what mental health is, how to challenge stigma, basic knowledge of some common mental health issues, causes and triggers of poor mental health on board, including the challenges of crew dynamics and education on 'banter' and bullying & harassment. It includes how to nurture a culture of care and support onboard, looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing as well as strategies for building resilience and signposting to professional help and resources

Internationally recognised qualification and assessment standard under the GUEST IAMI accredited pathway 

Developed in conjunction with multiple yachting training providers to ensure established, reputable alignment.
